A New Method of Use of Alpha-1 Adrenoreceptor Antagonists for Fetal Lower Urinary Tract Obstruction (LUTO)

This new approach to using alpha-1 adrenoreceptor antagonists for fetal lower urinary tract obstruction (LUTO) therapeutically relaxes the obstructed fetal bladder outlet, thereby improving bladder emptying and preventing damage to fetal organs. LUTO impairs fetal bladder emptying, leading to megabladder, back‑pressure injury to the kidneys, and critically low amniotic fluid, which is essential for normal lung development. Currently, the only available treatments involve invasive surgeries that carry substantial risks and can fail or require repeat procedures. This is the first approach of its kind to describe the use of TAM or other α‑1 blockers as a targeted fetal therapy, making this method of use novel and potentially groundbreaking.
