Ostomy Leakage Alarm SystemA medical device used to detect a leak in an ostomy pouch and alert the user of the leak. This device would be implantable/ attached to the ostomy pouch and detect leaks via the presence of oxygen. Upon detection of the leak, the device would emit an alarm, or notify the user through their mobile phone such that they can replace the pouch in a timely manner. Ostomy pouches are artificial pouches that attach to individuals with a stoma (ostomates) to collect fully digested fecal material. The pouches are anaerobic inside, thus devoid of oxygen. Oxygen is introduced to the inside environment of the pouch in event of a leak or detachment of the pouch from the skin of the ostomate. Thus, the inventors propose an oxygen-sensitive alarm to alert the ostomate of a leak in the pouch such that it can be replaced in a timely manner. The device would be placed inside the pouch, or on the surface of the pouch with probes inserted into the pouch. Upon entry of oxygen into the pouch, the device would either emit a low sound to alert the user or notify the user via their mobile phone. Prompt notification of a pouch leak would allow time for the ostomate to locate a private setting to replace the ostomy pouch with a new one, thus saving significant embarrassment or loss of dignity brought on by a public pouch leak/ rupture. Approximately 1 in 500 individuals in the US use an ostomy pouch, and currently there are no products available to detect and alert of pouch leaks. Thus far, the inventors have conceptualized the product and next steps include development of a prototype and non-invasive clinical trials. |
